An American writer searches for a kidnapped Venetian saint
In a remote Venice church, a dead woman named Santa Teodora lies before the altar. She has been there for centuries, ever since the Crusaders carried her mummified body away from the Holy Land, and she is as much a part of this mysterious city as the Grand Canal itself. Urbino Macintyre, an American expatriate who makes a living writing biographies of legendary Venetians, believes he knows every detail of Teodora’s legend, but another chapter is about to be added to her myth.
Twenty years after a flood ravaged the city, Santa Teodora has vanished from the church. Macintyre’s nose for history leads him to investigate the case, which he suspects might be related to the demises of two local women. Death can no longer touch the saint, but it may be waiting for Urbino Macintyre.

This is the first Venice mystery I read by the author, and it is the best. Urbino's relationship with Countess Barbara is superb, the description of the city is spectacular, and the writing is wonderful.Like all authors, Mr. S. goes downhill a bit in future novels. What a shame.

Death in a Serene City The Mysteries of Venice Book 1 edition by Edward Sklepowich Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Prepare to immerse yourself in the moody mysteries of Venice - and to not want to surface anytime soon. Unless, perhaps, to visit Venice in person.
This is a first-rate mystery, set in Venice, and superbly told. As well a history of Venice is worked into the text; perhaps I should add the art of Venice is worked into the story. I highly recommend this.
This is an intelligent and entertaining mystery. The author's descriptions of Venice, the engaging characters, the history created an fine atmosphere for murder. This is not a fast paced thriller, but a slowly built mystery that's meant to be savored. I'm off to buy the next book in this series.
Boring and lacking in energy.
I read and LOVED every book in the series . Wonderfully eccentric characters in beautiful Venice .
Odd and interesting characters.
